Infrared conversion 350D 2014-06-29

My EOS 350D camera is now nine years old. And still working well. But after being replaced by its successor, the 700D, about half a year ago, it's being used only rarely. The perfect opportunity to convert it to an infrared camera!

The advantage of a modified camera for infrared photography is, besides others, that the exposure times become hand-holdable, compared to many seconds with a non-converted camera.

Reason for this is the low pass / infrared blocking filter in front of the sensor. This filter both blurs the image to prevent Moiré pattern and blocks infrared radiation, because the sensor is also sensitive for it, but the effect is not desired in normal photography. When using an infrared filter, it always competes with the infrared blocking filter in front of the sensor - lengthening the exposure times.

The infrared blocking filter (cyan, right), together with the infrared (pass) filter, photographed with an unmodified camera and the modified IR camera:

Finally, a graph showing the shorter exposition times compared with unmodified cameras (note: newer cameras have stronger IR blocking filters, see 350D vs 60D):

Blurring of the clouds in the first infrared picture is due to the comparatively long exposure time of 30 s.
